Composition
• Depending on the type of granite, it will have different minerals in it, but it will always contain quartz and feldspar. These two materials are what gives granite a light color. Darker granites have various minerals to give it the darker color. These large mineral grains fit tightly together and when combined with the slow cooling period the rock underwent, you have a very durable and strong material. In fact, its main two minerals, quartz and feldspar are actually harder than steel.
• Formation
  Granite is found all over the earth in areas where the Earth’s crust has eroded. Granite forms when the Earth’s continental rocks melt usually due to applying large amounts of heat or adding other components such as water or carbon dioxide. When the Earth slowly releases heat and fluids, continental crust turns to granite.
• Quarrying Granite
  In the early days of quarrying granite, workers used steam drills, wedges and hammers to free it from the Earth. The drills would make holes along the edge of the granite and then wedges and hammers would break it off into slabs. Today, quarries use powered tools and blasting techniques to get the job done. Most quarrymen also need to be knowledgeable in rock structure.
• Creating Your Countertops
  Only a small percent of granite leaves the quarry as a rough block. Most is cut to the correct dimensions and finished for the project in mind. From this point, the designers and installers take over to create and install customized granite countertops.

Prevention

There is an old saying that goes; an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of regret. This applies especially to your teeth. Brushing every day is cheaper and much less painful than not doing so and getting a bunch of cavities. There a number of easy things you can do to prevent the painful experience of breaking a tooth.

• Brush, Brush, Brush – The best way to prevent a broken tooth is to keep them healthy and strong. This means brushing and flossing.
• Teeth are not tools – I can’t tell you how many times I have seen people biting on packaging or something else and pulling yanking on it. It makes me cringe a little. Teeth are not a can opener.
• Get a Mouth Guard – Contact sports like basketball, football, or even soccer, can be very dangerous for your teeth. Any dentist who does reconstructive dentistry should be able to fit you with a mouth guard that will protect your teeth.

Home Treatment

If, somehow, you do end up with a broken tooth, you need to see the dentist as soon as possible. Even if the tooth doesn’t look broken it could be fractured. But even if your appointment is the next day, you will want to do something to help your mouth.

• Cold Pack – A cold pack will help ease the pain and help with any inflammation that might come from the injury.
• Dental Cement – This is a temporary fix that you can find at most drug stores. It will cover the nerve and protect the break from getting aggravated.
• Pain Reliever – The easiest and simplest solution. You will definitely want to take some of these.

Placer Mining

The miners in the show use the same methods that have been around for centuries. Basically they find an area where gold has been liberated from its containing materials by natural processes like water flow. That is why the early gold rushes occurred around rivers and creeks. If you pay attention to the show, you will notice the miners in it are doing the same thing. They find a likely location near a river where sediments have been deposited for years and then they separate the gold from the rest of the dirt.

The best way to separate the gold is by exploiting the fact that it is much heavier than any of the other materials around it. The simplest method is panning. the process begins when a small amount of gold bearing sediment is put into a pan with water. the pan is shaken so that the heavier gold sinks to the bottom and the lighter dirt is washed away. Every other method is just a variation of panning. The machines that are used on the TV show are just mechanical, larger scale, versions of panning.

Open Pit Mining

This is the most common method of obtaining Gold. An open pit mine is basically what is says, it is a giant hole in the ground that gold comes out of. The biggest difference from placer mining is that gold in an open pit is still trapped in the rock. The method works by removing huge amounts of material from the pit and processing it so that gold can be taken out. Giant trucks are constantly moving in and out of the mine, leaving their loads on a vertical conveyor that transports the ore to a refinery where it is smelted and everything that is not gold gets burned away.

Although the reality show does present a real method of mining, it definitely does not represent the entire reality of the gold mining industry.

Bad Fad: The Mullet

Mullets are notorious for representing country bumpkins, rednecks with an adult beverage open and likely half empty, or bringing back the nostalgic feeling of confusion as to why there were so many mullets in the 1980′s. While some may argue that the mullet was made famous by George Kennedy’s character in the 1967 American film Cool Hand Luke, others certainly contribute the popularity to the hip hop group, The Beastie Boys, who used the terms “mullet” and “mullet head” as descriptive phrases in their hit song “Mullet Head”. While the most recent occurences are often the most remembered, there are tales of mullets in more ancient times. Historians have claimed the mullet was actually a “royal hairstyle” with specific purposes. The short hair in the front was a symbol of status, while the long hair in the back allowed any type of headwear or crown to more comfortably stay in place. Whatever the true origin, mullets seem to have made a comeback. While entirely understandable the uprising of the mullet in the 1980′s can be attributed to a general confusion or identity crisis’ by American youths, also poor haircuts given by parents or grandparents. But the year is now 2012 and mullets are once again being spotted perched and dangling behind the heads of the so called “popular” teenagers. If we’ve learned anything from our history its the longevity of mullets will not last, how could it? In 5 years they will be completely eradicted (hopefully) with a resurgence around the year 2032, but let’s hope not.

Being energy conscious at a time when the impact of humans on the environment is such a hot topic is a fad that is certainly welcome to stay. For this project you’ll need a piece of land suitable for building a lake, a source of water you can get rights to, a source of sand (ideally that you don’t have to pay for). And Equipment to haul several tons of sand (dump trucks and belt conveyors for bulk materials work best, but a pickup and shovel will do).

The best place for your beach will include about an acre. If you already have a lake, that’s great. If not, you may be able to flood a low lying area of your property from a canal or a brook you have water rights to. Be sure doing so won’t threaten flooding any basements or septic tanks in the area. If you need to dig a basin for your lake, be sure to get proper permits.

If you live near sand dunes or a lesser used beach you may be able to get sand from there. An inclined portable conveyor belt system will make loading and unloading your truck much easier. If you don’t have access to one, get some buddies to help load it up.

While the technological advancements in the last few decades make such an endeavour possible, the probability that it will occur is still very much in question. So before you go predicting the downfall of traditional mining and selling your vertical conveyor and your hard hat and sink all of your cash into space mining stock, remember that we still have a long way to go before this concept becomes a reality. regular earth bound mining is not going anywhere for a while

Obstacles to Space Mining

Perhaps the biggest obstacle to space mining it that you are mining in SPACE! It took human beings years of dedicated work just to get a man to orbit the earth. Since then we have been on the moon and we have learned how to space walk, but the idea of sending human beings out for extended periods of time while performing dangerous tasks seems like a stretch. More likely, some kind of robotic mining system will have to be used. This means untold millions in development. If a feasible machine is developed what happens when it breaks down, as it most assuredly will, during a crucial aspect of the mining process. Do you build another robot to fix the first robot? What if that one breaks? Do you have a robot to fix the robot that is supposed to fix the original robot?

In addition to the harsh environment of deep space, distance is a big problem. Communication with the miners or robots would be delayed by the time it takes for the message to travel. It also takes a lot of resources to even get to the mining site. The mining equipment would likely be heavy and, unless it was constructed in orbit, it would take an incredible amount of fuel to push it out of Earth’s gravity.

Advantage of Earth Mining

Our home planet has numerous resources still available, especially the kind that could be obtained from asteroids. Obviously asteroids would not have any of fossil fuels, since oil and gas come from organic sources. Space mining would be focused mainly on minerals like iron and nickel. But other technological advances, like recycling, have made these resources more available. One of the touted advantages of space mining is that it has no effect on our environment. Any waste products of the space mining would be left out in space. but with new advances in mining technology the environmental footprint of traditional mining has been greatly reduced. Hydraulic fracturing is one method that has come about over the last few years which allows for mineral extraction while minimizing the effect on the surface environment.

While it is still to early to tell if space mining will be a reality there is no question that it is still a gamble. Any significant advancements won’t happen for a long time. If you are the kind of person who likes to see the results of their actions during their lifetime, then you might want to invest in frac equipment before blasting your savings into space.
